environmental impacts of watermelon production in guilan province through life cycle assessment
Authors
abstract
iran is among the biggest emitters of greenhouse gasses in the world. agricultural sector has a remarkable role in non-renewable energy consumption and then, the environmental impacts in this country. in this regard, the environmental impacts of watermelon production as the most important melons produced in guilan province of iran were investigated through the life cycle assessment (lca) approach. the primary data were gathered using the questioners and face to face interview with 58 watermelon producers in kiashahr region of guilan province in 2014. the environmental impacts were classified into six impact categories including global warming, acidification, terrestrial eutrophication, depletion of fossil resources, depletion of phosphate and potash resources. results revealed that the terrestrial eutrophication (0.185) followed by depletion of phosphate resources (0.116) had the highest negative impacts on the environment. therefore, efficient use of chemical fertilizers, specially nitrogen fertilizer and replacing them with a variety of organic fertilizers and using the bio-fertilizers can reduce the negative environmental impacts of watermelon production in terms of terrestrial eutrophication and phosphorus fertilizers groups in guilan province, iran.

investigating the environmental impacts of kiwifruit production in guilan province of iran based on life cycle assessment methodology
this study aimed to evaluate the environmental consequences of kiwifruit production in guilan province of iran by the life cycle assessment (lca) methodology during growing season of 2011-2012. data were obtained from 84 kiwifruit producers using a face to face questionnaire method. for this purpose, a functional unit equal to one ton kiwifruit was assumed based on iso 14040 method. impacts of ...
full textLife-Cycle Assessment of Environmental Effects on Rapeseed Production
In recent years, increasing the awareness on the environmental problems, especially global warming, has increase the concerns about the impact of emissions on the global climate. The current study was conducted to evaluate and analyze the environmental effects of rapeseed production in the form of life cycle using SimaPro software with the aim concentration on climate changes and impact of acid...
full textMicroalgal biomass production pathways: evaluation of life cycle environmental impacts
BACKGROUND Microalgae are touted as an attractive alternative to traditional forms of biomass for biofuel production, due to high productivity, ability to be cultivated on marginal lands, and potential to utilize carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial flue gas. This work examines the fossil energy return on investment (EROIfossil), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and direct Water Demands (WD) of ...
full textPredicting the environmental impacts of chicken systems in the United Kingdom through a life cycle assessment: broiler production systems.
The aim of this study was to apply the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, from cradle to gate, to quantify the environmental burdens per 1,000 kg of expected edible carcass weight in the 3 main broiler production systems in the United Kingdom: 1) standard indoor, 2) free range, and 3) organic, and to identify the main components of these burdens. The LCA method evaluates production systems log...
full textChallenges of Electricity Production Scenarios Modelling for Life Cycle Assessment of Environmental Impacts
This communication presents a first attempt at making a life cycle assessment of prospective electricity production scenarios which were designed in the EnerGEO project. We start by a basic review of system (in this case, scenario) modelling expectations in today’s LCA study. We then review some of the challenges of implementation due to the lack of detailed description of present and future el...
full textlife cycle assessment of paste production (case study: alborz province)
agriculture (mechanization), food industry and environment are the concepts that cannot be surveyed separately (because of their interaction). present research aimed to study tomato paste production by applying life cycle assessment. two functional unit of kg co2-eq/ kg tomato and kg co2-eq / kg paste was used. data were collected from one paste factory in alborz province and open-field tomato ...
